Getting Started with Shower Doors
A shower door’s main purpose is to keep water inside your shower, but it can add a beautiful design element to your space as well. Through a variety of styles and sizes, shower doors can accommodate most showering spaces, including bath/shower combinations, limited spaces, and steam showers.
As you begin your search, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind.
A Guide to Shower Doors
What is the size and style of your bathroom space?
The most important step in installing a shower door is measuring. Although these doors have a certain amount of flexibility for different openings, starting with the right measurements is crucial for selecting the correct door for your space. Our showroom consultants can help you the top and bottom widths properly before presenting shower door possibilities.
What type of shower door do you prefer?
Shower doors are available in a variety of configurations. For doors that swing open like a traditional door, go with pivot shower doors, also called swinging or hinge doors.
Need to hold in steam? Steam Shower Doors are available in pivot models, contributing to a spa-like environment in your bathroom.
Sliding shower doors are typically chosen for baths and large showers, offering doors that overlap with a smooth and quiet sliding action.
Framed or frameless?
Do you prefer the look of framed or frameless doors? There are plenty of options in each category, and each style achieves its purpose. Kohler offers both frameless and semiframeless pivot shower doors that elegantly blend in with your bathroom design.
Framed shower doors feature an aluminum frame mounted to the edges of the glass-door panel, which adds structure to the glass for solid operation.
All of the metal elements on the door, whether framed or frameless include the handle and are available in several finish options to coordinate with faucet and accessory finishes.
Customize your glass look and feel.
Shower doors can be clear for a clean look that enlarges the space or frosted or patterned glass for privacy and a vignetted softness. Kohler shower doors feature their special CleanCoat, which is a substance that prevents residue from clinging to the glass.
The thickness of your glass also affects how substantial the door feels as you open and close it. You can select 1/4,” 5/16″, 3/8″ or 1/2″ glass thickness. Visit our showroom to see the differences between these different thicknesses. Note that thinner glass typically requires a frame for additional support.
